Over the past few years, I’ve become obsessed with sheer lip products. I feel like the whole beauty community has transitioned from matte liquid lipsticks to sheerer, more comfortable formulas. And I’m a huge fan of them!
I’ve slowly been building my sheer lippie collection over time and I’ve noticed a few possible dupes in there. Coming to think of it, it’s kind of inevitable since every brand is launching its own version of the sheer lipstick.
Today I want to focus specifically on 2 brands that have the most spot-on dupable look: The Glossier Generation G Lipsticks and the Ohii Lip Smudges.
Both of these formulas look very similar on the lips and I made it my mission to try both of them out and report my findings with you.
Both of these formulas promise a sheer wash of color with a soft matte finish. They’re both low maintenance and easy to apply and they’re also very comfortable to wear. When you put these on your lips they look almost identical but they’re not quite the same, formula wise.
The Generation G lipsticks are sort of like the OG sheer lipsticks in my opinion and the formula has gone through some changes in the past. I’ve had them in my collection for a long time and I love them.
Upon first application, they’re sheerer than the Lip Smudges and they’re also more matte and drying. They build up very easily but the color will always look sheer and stain-like. Because of the drier formula, I find that they last longer on the lips than the Lip Smudges do.
The Lip Smudge formula is a lot newer in the market but it’s another one of my faves. When you apply these you get a lot more pigment right off the bat than with Gen G and they build up more intensely. This formula is also a lot more satin than it is matte and it feels almost balmy when you apply it. These lippies look almost matte on the lips but they don’t feel drying.
These are much more comfortable to wear but they also wear off quicker than the Gen G lippies. And since the color payoff is much more intense, these can end up looking like a regular lipstick instead of a sheer wash of color, if you build them up.
Another key differentiator between the two is the shades. Glossier takes a more neutral approach with a few pops of color and Ohii does the exact opposite by having mostly colorful shades and few neutrals. Personally, I enjoy Glossier’s shades more and I reach for them almost daily because the colors are easy to wear. But that’s just personal preference.
Both of these products are similar in price and in size so it really depends on what you’re looking for. The formulas are quite different but the end result is almost exact. So it will really come down to formula and color preference if you’re choosing between these two. They’re pretty great dupes if you ask me.
In the end, both the Generation G and Lip Smudges are fantastic lipsticks and they really stand out in my collection!
Have you tried any of these lippies already? Do you think they’re total dupes?
Thank you so much for reading!
